ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It leads to the gradual loss of voluntary muscle movement, eventually causing paralysis and, in most cases, death. There is currently no cure for ALS, and the exact cause of the disease is unknown. It is often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, named after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with ALS in the 1930s.
